A trip to the dentist should not inspire terror, but for millions of Americans, it does. Dental anxiety and dental phobias can make it too difficult for some patients to get even regular dental checkups or cleaning. Others may delay critical treatments for decayed, abscessed, or otherwise diseased or damaged teeth. Our goal is to work closely with anxious patients and help ease their fears so that their next dental checkup can be comfortably relaxed.
Sedation dentistry is the field of dentistry that uses medications to keep patients feeling calm and comfortable. Our office has long been centered on patient comfort. Each aspect of our office has been designed with our patients in mind, and our staff is friendly and compassionate. We even use soothing music to relax you. Now we also offer sedation dentistry.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a pleasant blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen. We add a pleasant smell to enhance your experience. Nitrous oxide goes to work almost immediately. A small mask is placed over your nose before we start your treatment, and as you breathe in through your nose, you will begin to feel drowsy and relaxed. The nitrous oxide can be adjusted for maximum anxiety relief. Once your treatment is complete, the gas can be turned off, and it will be completely cleared from your system in just a few minutes, which means that you can drive yourself home safely.
You may be a candidate for sedation if you:
• Have dental anxiety or phobia
• Are more sensitive to pain
• Have an overactive gag reflex
• Have extensive treatment needs
Unlike some other medications, nitrous oxide or laughing gas can be used on patients of all ages. It is not habit-forming or addictive, it has a long safety record, has few or no side effects, and it is effective and predictable. We can use nitrous oxide for each of your appointments, or we can use it only when you come in for treatments about which you feel nervous, such as dental extractions or root canal therapy. Give us a call today to learn more about how we can make your next dental visit more relaxed and comfortable or to schedule your checkup.
